US/Europe feud gets nasty
The US and Europe remained deadlocked on the issue of jet subsidies with another deadline passing without any resolution.
It’s a “steadily nastier feud,” said the International Herald Tribune.
The newest effort to negotiate leaves Airbus in limbo for when it might apply for roughly $1.3 billion loans for its possible new long-distance carrier, the A350. That plane will compete with the 787 Dreamliner that Boeing has already put into development.
The disagreement is about “launch aid,” which can total up to one-third of the development cost of a new aircraft. The government loans do not have to be repaid immediately.
The issue takes on more importance because Airbus is working toward an official introduction of the A350, and government-backed loans could affect its price.
