US golfers head overseas for the summer season
Golf was invented in Scotland, so it comes as no surprise that the world’s most dedicated golfers come from the UK. But it was the US and Canada that took the number two and three spots for the summer season, reports the International Association of Golf Tour Operators.
Sweden was the fourth largest outbound market, followed by Germany.
The 2013 Golf Tourism Report from KPMG’s Golf Advisory Practice reports that golf tourism sales are up 9.3% in 2012 over 2011, with more than 1.6 million golfers packing their irons and heading overseas.
More than half of the golf tour operators surveyed reported increased sales in 2012, and only 3% reported significant decreases.
UK golfers are the biggest golf travel market in the world, sending more golfers abroad than any other nation year-round, the surveys said.
The most popular global destinations were Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Turkey, and Istanbul.
Though they enjoy an age-old game, golfers are a technologically savvy group, the surveys found. Almost 40% of golf trips are booked online or by email, and another 40% are booked by phone. Only one in five trips is booked in person.
