US isn’t only country desiring a vacation

Close to half of Canadians in a recent survey believe they are “very” or “somewhat” vacation deprived, the highest level in four years and despite the fact they receive an average of almost 20 vacation days from their employers.

“Despite the upswing in the Canadian economy, vacation deprivation continues to pervade the Canadian workforce,” said Beverly Beuerrmann-King, a stress and wellness expert.

The survey by Harris Decimia found almost a quarter of Canadians aren’t taking all of their vacation time, giving back an average of 2.17 unused vacation days to their employer.

The annual Vacation Deprivation study found that one quarter of Canadians said it’s more important to ut funds into savings rather than spend money on vacations.

Canadians feel they need a vacation now more than ever because of stress from the current economy, down from last year. Guilt over taking vacations due to the economic climate is down too, with just 14 percent of Canadians reporting this as a concern, compared with 17 percent last year.

So if it’s not the economy, then what’s the problem?

The survey found that while almost all employed Canadians have vacation days (90 percent), almost half (46 percent) say there are a variety of reasons why they wouldn’t use them all, including:

—Not scheduling vacation time far enough in advance to be able to take all of their vacation days (14 percent).

—Work is their life and they’re too busy to get away (12 percent).

—Their significant other is unable to get away from their job (10 percent).

And work-related concerns even cause interruptions to vacations that are already planned, with one-third of Canadians saying they’ve checked their work messages while on vacation (30 percent) and one-quarter have even cancelled or postponed vacation plans in the past because of work.
