US issues worldwide travel alert
The US has issued a worldwide travel alert for Americans in response to ‘increased terrorist threats’ as Belgium announced that its capital Brussels would stay at the highest level of alert for another week.
The US state department said it had information that terrorist organisations IS, al-Qaeda and Boko Haram were continuing to plan attacks ‘in multiple regions’.
It is advising all citizens to be vigilant in all public spaces and when using public transport.Travellers are also advised to avoid large crowds or crowded places.
The alert, which came after the multiple attacks in Paris on November 13 and in Mali last weekend will remain in place until February 24 next year.
However, a US state department spokesman told the BBC there was no reason to believe that US citizen would be specifically targetted.
Meanwhile the metro in Brussels is expected to reopen tomorrow and schools will reopen at the same time, but the city will remain at the highest level of alert after security chiefs received information terrorists were planning to attack multiple targets in the Belgian capital.
