US online companies looking overseas
With US demand decreasing, US online travel agencies such as Expedia and Orbitz are more often looking to the European market where vacations are longer.
“Foreign markets, where low-cost airlines are adding more routes, are ripe for one-stop online shops where users can book flights, hotels and rental cars all at once,” according to experts quoted by Reuters.
International growth is far outpacing the US.
PhoCusWright said that gross US bookings by US online travel agencies grew 19% in 2005, down from 21% the previous year.
But international gross bookings have increased 115% this year, up from 97% in 2005.
