US passport scams surging
As two million applications for US passports cause a processing bottleneck, reports of passport scams are rising. U.S. Rep. Lauren Underwood cited numerous reports of passport scams across the country, as travellers are desperate to go overseas.
There are waits of up more than four months for passport renewals and up to three months even for an expedited renewal service.
Fraudsters have been charging for a fast-track service but don’t deliver, while some have been selling the ‘urgent travel’ appointment slots that passport offices offer for free. These slots have sometimes been sold for thousands of dollars the Better Business Bureau says.
