A US tourist has been arrested in India for flying a drone over the Taj Mahal.

The drone was spotted twice hovering above the iconic attraction which is surrounded by a tight security cordon, especially after the US recently issued a travel alert warning of possible terror attacks in the country.

After a search, police found a man on top of a nearby hotel preparing to fly the drone again.

"A tourist from Ohio has been identified as R Nicholas. He was detained by police and brought to a local police station. Flying of drones or any other flying object is prohibited in and around Taj Mahal," a police statement said.

Authorities said there was no malicious intent.

The US embassy in New Delhi has been informed it said.
