US travel prices to nosedive?

Travel commentator Christopher Elliott is predicting US travel prices will plummet this fall. “But doesn’t that happen every year…No, not like this,” he says.

He predicts it is likely that dramatic and unexpected bargains that will be on a par with last year’s record-low prices.

If you shop smart, where are the bargains? His answer:

—Europe. With a stronger dollar, Europe has become more of a bargain this year, including this summer. “Remove most of the tourists and the deals multiply,” he writes. He quotes readers as telling him hotel rates can be found for under US$100 a night.

—Theme parks. “There aren’t the best of times for amusement parks. Fall is typically a slow time, and with the rest of the travel industry looking at a possible downturn, some parks are already getting aggressive with their pricing.”

—Las Vegas. Rates will be going for as little as $55 a night, even for luxurious place such as the MGM Grand.

—All-inclusives. Half-price deals should be around.
