US travelers this holiday spending less but still traveling

Thursday, 22 May, 2007 0

What can US travel providers expect this upcoming Memorial Day?

One obvious area: it will cost more to fill up the gas tank but that’s not stopping Americans from driving.

Over 32 million travelers will get in their cars and drive more than 50 miles over the holiday weekend, according to AAA. That’s up nearly two percent from last year.

Other expectations:

Ø       Vacationers will not drive as far as they have in the past, says AAA.

Ø       They will stay in less expensive hotels.

Ø       They will eat in cheaper restaurants.

Ø       The average household will spend $594 over the holiday weekend, says AAA.

Lesser spending is a trend that’s expected to continue through the summer.
