US travelers warned of security threat in Guyana
US Embassy officials in Guyana have issued an unprecedented security warning advising US citizens not to travel on Caribbean Airlines flights to the US due to "unconfirmed threat information."
The US Embassy in Guyana posted a statement on its website saying the advisory was specifically for flights departing Guyana to the US today, February 10 until Wednesday February 12.
The statement said: "The Embassy advises all US citizens in Guyana traveling on Caribbean Airlines (CAL) to the US from Monday, February 10 through Wednesday, February 12, 2014, to make alternate travel arrangements."
The Embassy gave no further details of the threat but advised US travelers to check the State Department’s website before deciding to travel.
Caribbean Airlines flights from Guyana to the US will operate as normal according to the airline.
The airline is working with airport and State Department authorities to ensure all security procedures are followed, said CAL head of corporate communications, Clint Williams.
Cheddi Jagan International Airport also issued a statement and are monitoring the situation with security agencies and the government’s Public Works Ministry.
They are "adopting the highest security posture to protect passengers, crew, aircraft and airport employees," the statement said.
