VietJet is taking a leaf out of AirAsia’s book with ambitions of become much more than just a budget airline.

The airline plans to take the plunge into the e-commerce sector as it looks to diversify.

It plans to leverage its extensive customer data in cooperation with banks, hotels and other partners.

Vietjet vice chairwoman Nguyen Thi Thuy Binh said a new e-commerce unit could launch within two years.

It would offer banking and insurance, consumer goods, and travel related products such as hotel bookings.

"All the suppliers and partners will join our platform to provide products and services to not only our 30 million passengers but also hundreds of millions of customers in Vietnam and other parts of the world," she told the Nikkei Asian Review.

E-commerce revenues in Vietnam surged 30% to about $8 billion in 2018 according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The country has the highest internet economy penetration in Southeast Asia, accounting for 4% of GDP.

AirAsia has started pivoting toward a ‘superapp’ strategy to profit from customer data through financial services and general e-commerce.

It is investing $20 million a year in diversifying, especially in related ancillary services such as holiday packages.
