Viking has unveiled more details of its ambitious plans to bring its European river cruising concept to the Mississippi.

It includes larger capacity vessels with 386-passenger river ship Viking Mississippi under construction in Louisiana.

It launches in August 2022 with planned itineraries linking St. Louis and St. Paul, as well as voyages between New Orleans and Memphis.

It will also sail a longer voyage between New Orleans and St. Paul.

The ship will feature 193 staterooms, a pool and sun terrace, and multiple dining venues.

"We invented the concept of modern river cruising when we got our start 23 years ago. Since then, many people have come to appreciate the unique exploration that comes with river cruising — but currently there are very few options to do so on American rivers," said Viking chairman Torstein Hagen.

Mississippi River itineraries will cross several US states with planned calls in Baton Rouge, New Orleans, St. Louis, La Crosse, Wisconsin, and St. Paul, MN among others.

Cruise fares include shore excursions, all meals, port charges and government taxes, lectures, room service and free Wi-Fi.

Reservations for the inaugural season go live on April 15, 2020.
