Virgin Australia the second carrier to ditch LAX in-flight caterer
Another carrier has joined American Airlines in boycotting a catering facility at Los Angeles International Airport due to a listeria bug scare.
Virgin Australia stopped using the Gate Gourmet facility which provides in-flight meals for several airlines at LAX.
"Virgin Australia recently stopped using the services of our onboard catering company at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) due to a potential issue with the standard of their food," it said in a message to passengers.
"We’re making alternative arrangements for our LAX onboard catering but over the coming days there will be limited catering available on flights from Los Angeles," it added.
"Guests will still receive a food service onboard; however we’re sorry this won’t be up to our normal high standards."
The airline is also handing out food vouchers as compensation.
American Airlines was the first to stop using Gate Gourmet earlier this month due to ‘an abundance of caution,’ but several other carriers still do.
These include Delta Air Lines and Virgin Atlantic.
Health and safety agencies found traces of listeria at the facility, while Gate Gourmet said corrective action had been taken to neutralize it.
