Virgin flights delayed by weather out of Adelaide

A report in the Adelaide Advertiser says that Saturday’s chilly weather saw about 300 frustrated passengers kept waiting, some for more than four hours, to board Virgin Blue flights to Melbourne.

Fog in Melbourne caused the cancellation of a 6.10am flight out of Adelaide, while a 7am flight was delayed for more than three hours to repair a faulty exit light.

Frustrated passengers, many who had been at the airport as early as 5am, said Virgin Blue ground staff gave “different stories” about the reasons for the delays and the times of the next available flights.

Sisters Laura, 22, and Hayley, 21, were due to fly to Melbourne for a four-day holiday on the 6.10 flight but were told it was “iced in”.

“The main problem was we were told they were iced in but every other plane left – Qantas left, JetStar left – but we’re still here,” Laura said.

She said during the confusion, passengers in wheelchairs were taken to the plane and brought back several times.

Irate passengers were eventually offered coffee vouchers by Virgin Blue staff but this was little consolation for Hayley.

“We expected credit on our flights or money back; it’s half a day’s holiday,” she said.

“You don’t get up at 3am to spend five hours in the airport.”

Virgin Blue public and media relations manager Amanda Bolger said fog in Melbourne had caused numerous disruptions.
