Visitors “destroying Phuket reef”
Tourists are being held responsible for the destruction of two thirds of the coral reef off the Thai resort of Phuket.
According to the BBC News website, which quotes a representative from the Phuket Marine Biological Centre, most of the damage has been caused by debris from building works in the resort.
Spokesman Nipon Pongsuwanthe reportedly said that diving and fishing have also led to the destruction of the reef.
As many as four million people visited the west-coast resort last year, the website reports, with Thai tourism authorities keen to double the number of visitors to the country by 2008.
The “Andaman triangle”, including Phuket, is specifically being marketed as a prime marine attraction, the BBC states.
