Visitors to Maldives urged to boycott resorts with alleged abuses
A campaign group is urging holidaymakers to boycott almost a dozen resort in the Maldives which it claims are involved in human rights or environmental abuses.
Ethical Maldives Alliance has published the list of hotels it wants holidaymakers to avoid on a website which appears to have been set up solely for this purpose.
It said: "When choosing to holiday in the Maldives, we urge travellers to carefully consider their choice of resort and business, avoiding those that directly or indirectly contribute towards abuse of ethical issues."
It claims some hotels are guilty of ill-treatment of local and foreign workers, dumping waste at sea, illegal shark fishing and supporting corruption on the islands.
Its website has colour-coded resorts in the Maldives, asking visitors to avoid 11 marked red. Visitors are urged to visit the green resorts instead, which make up the majority.
However, the campaign group has not provide any proof of the claims made against the resorts it is urging visitors to boycott, and there are no details of who is behind the group on the website.
