Volcanic ash grounds flights near Mexico City
The Popocatepetl volcano near Mexico City got into the Fourth of July spirit last week with a shower of ash and vapor two mils high over several days.
Southwest today is allowing customers to change itineraries on tickets to or from Mexco City.
Flights on American, US Airways, Delta and Alaska have been delayed by the smoke in the air from the volcano, which sits about 50 miles from Mexico’s capital. The city has been covered in volcanic ash.
The volcano in the central state of Puebla has been more active than usual this year, and officials have been monitoring it closely.
American Airlines "is keeping a close eye on the smoke plume" but the rain from Hurricane Erick helped hold down the smoke, a spokesperson told TravelMole.
In ancient times Popo, whose name means "Smoking Mountain" in Aztec, was known to bury entire settlements.
After sitting quietly for 50 years, it has been emitting ash almost daily, and big explosions intermittently, since 1994 (see previous story at https://www.travelmole.com/news_feature.php?news_id=2006431&c=setreg®ion=3).
