WA cracks down on adventure tourism operators
Western Australia’s State Government has allocated more than $500,000 to improve safety by developing strict new standards for adventure tourism operators.
The WA State Government says that the larger part of the money will be spent on a compulsory accreditation program for operators, which was one of the recommendations of a recent Government review of adventure tourism.
Tourism Minister Sheila McHale says the changes follow some near tragedies in the state’s wilderness areas, adding “Our goal and our aim is that all adventure tourism operators are properly assessed and accredited so that the lives of our visitors are safe.”
Minister McHale says it will make accreditation compulsory, adding “Whilst the majority of operators are competent and some are indeed accredited, it’s voluntary, but we want to make sure everybody in adventure tourism is properly accredited and properly competent and equipped”.
