New style destination tour operator set to change the face of tourism – sustainably

They say ‘We hate Tourism’ actually they are called http://www.wehatetourismtours.com

Bruno (the sort of boss) said "I’m not a tourist guide man, I hate tourism tours. I’m doing this because I’m unemployed, I have time, I love my city and to share this love and knowledge with everyone. I want to make them understand things around here and that´s it".

We Hate Tourism Tours was born at the beginning of 2010 so this anarchistic group has been going for seven years. Bruno took his father’s words to heart "More than just our son, you’ll be always a result of the people you meet and the places you see."

They call themselves urban diplomats of all backgrounds who grew up in Lisbon and use local knowledge to properly introduce visitors to the city they love.

They say that their clients are responsible for "Us having a job in this moment, and we thank you for that, by sharing and making you experience the real Lisbon… The city we love (and sometimes hate too)."

And they say "We Portuguese are poor and ignorant but we have good weather and the smartest politicians in the world!"

Why are they important to world tourism?

Because they are hip and cool, young and dynamic and very tech-savvy. They are also building an alternative brand with consistency and integrity. But more importantly they are a local, locally-staffed, locally-engaged business getting business direct.

Their 100% local engagement also means something special for visitors – they get Portugal through truly local eyes. In other words they get the real – dis-intermediated deal. Obviously WeHateTourism tours spend no time at all gentrifying their offer – it is a no holds barred local experience packing its own punches..

Here is a selection of their tours:

  • Dinner with us or starve
  • Cycle or stay at home
  • We love pastries
  • There is also a shore excursion for cruise passengers – for those who want to break free of overpriced and underwhelming shore excursions (Pirates of the Cruise Ships)

So you get the picture – dynamic, determined and passionate and proud – why just Portugal?
