Weekend breaks cheaper abroad than in UK

Going abroad for the weekend can be cheaper than staying at home, according to a survey by Teletext Holidays.

Research shows that an average two-night break (the average being based on two-night breaks in the Canary Islands, Benidorm, Corfu and the Costa Dorada) costs GBP156, including flights, accommodation, food, drink, and “entertainment”.

Analysis of a “typical” weekend at home showed expenditure ranging from GBP150 in Cambridge to GBP185 in London, including two nights out, taxis, lunch, and entertainment. Previous research by Teletext showed that 13% of Britons go abroad at least three times a year.

The company’s marketing director Mark Bell said: “The days of saving up for a holiday are now over. As winter approaches there is still time to get a fix of sun overseas. People are left with two options – to stay at home and do what they usually do, or go abroad for the weekend.”

He added: “The number of bargain deals available has amd weekend breaks far more accessible and many Brits now take advantage of this and enjoy more short breaks.”
