What made Twitter go crazy?
Following in the footsteps of New York and Berlin, TFL (Transport for London) has announced that the long anticipated Night Tube will launch in London on 12 September 2015. Londoners rejoiced at the news, however not all London Underground lines will be involved in the scheme. The participating lines include; the Northern line, Jubilee line, Central line, Piccadilly line and the Victoria line – although certain branches of all lines will be excluded during the night hours. Twitter went crazy with users reacting to the news using the #NightTube, which was created in November when news of the night tube was first announced. The night tubes will run on Friday and Saturday nights with six to eight tubes running each hour – the perfect way to get home after a night out in the capital.

As we are all very well aware, last week saw Scotland vote against gaining independence. In addition to the staggering number of voters turning out at the polls (over 84%), online conversation on the topic was vast. Research by Bell Pottinger Wired has looked into the online discussions since December last year and calculated 8.8 million online conversations – the overwhelming majority coming from Twitter (97%) with less than 1% coming from news articles. The research also pulled out some of the top celebrity Tweets, from the likes of Andy Murray and J.K. Rowling, and showed that of the Tweeters, almost three quarters were male (72%).
It’s been a tough week for Apple who has faced not one but two PR nightmares, thanks to the latest IOS reportedly rendering iPhones unable to make calls and the #Bendgate disaster which is currently blitzing social media channels. #Bendgate refers to the reported design flaw – still yet to be acknowledged by Apple – that sees the new thinner and lighter iPhone 6 plus devices bend when kept in front trouser pockets. Apple’s competitors were quick to jump on the bandwagon, Samsung released a poster showing the iPhone 6 bending down at the foot of a Galaxy Note, proclaiming ‘Bend to those who are worthy’ while LG USA Mobile have also tweeted ‘Our phone doesn’t bend, it flexes…on purpose’. And it’s not just their rivals who are getting on the bandwagon with KitKat tweeting ‘We don’t bend, we #break,’ and of course memes are already cropping up in their hundreds. We wait with bated breath to hear Apple’s response.
