When in Turkey, don’t pick up stones
A German tourist is reportedly facing 10 years in a Turkish jail after his nine-year-old son collected pebbles from a beach.
According to the online news provider Ananova the 34-year-old man was arrested at Antalya airport, in the south of the country, after stones were discovered in his suitcase.
Despite protestations that his son had taken the stones for a school project, the man was arrested and charged with “smuggling archaeologically-valuable national treasures”.
According to Ananova, one German MEP has taken up the case and is appealing to the EU Turkish ambassador to ensure that the man is freed.
