When is a country not a country?
Serbia and Montenegro: New union created – for the time being at least
Anyone planning a holiday to Yugoslavia this summer should probably know that the country does not exist any more. As of yesterday, the country ceased to be, and has been replaced by the Union of Serbia and Montenegro. Before the series of wars in the last decade, Yugoslavia comprised six republics; Serbia, Montenegro, Bosnia, Croatia, Macedonia and Slovenia – now the last four in the list are independent states. Belgrade will remain capital of the new union, though it is not clear how long the union will last. The deal brokered by the former Yugoslav parliament will allow for a referendum on full independence in three years’ time, so it is entirely possible that the two states will separate at some stage in the future.
