Which? bashes TUI brochures

Saturday, 08 Mar, 2005 0

TUI has been accused of making British holiday brochures more complex and the holidays less affordable than in brochures elsewhere in Europe.

The latest edition of Holiday Which? magazine accuses TUI of charging £237 more for the same holiday in the UK brochure when compared with the Dutch version.

The holiday, a week’s break in the TUI-owned Riu Palace in Gran Canaria, costs £760 for Brits including flights, taxes, transfers and bed and breakfast accommodation, but is advertised at £523 in the Dutch brochure and £575 in the German edition, according to Holiday Which?

“We found that going Dutch is almost a third cheaper than buying British,” said the article in the Spring 2005 edition. “At those prices you could catch a cheap flight to Amsterdam and take the TUI holiday from there, and still be quids in.” The article also adds that German clients get free rail travel to the airport.

While this accusation has been marked at tour operators in the past, allegations by Which? that the British brochure is more complex than its European counterparts, is a concern for holidaymakers says Which?

The consumer association claims TUI’s German brochure is more informative and enables consumers to better calculate the total cost of the holiday without the need for “complicated sums”.

TUI’s response to Which? A variation in costs faced by TUI companies based in different countries.
