Widow sues after honeymoon drowning
Maldives: Firm denies any blame after drowning in Maldives lagoon
A woman whose husband drowned while on honeymoon in the Maldives is suing the holiday firm Sunworld, part of the JMC group.
According to a report in today’s Daily Mail, 32-year-old Lisa Jones is suing the group for £50,000 on the grounds of bereavement, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. She says the company should have warned of “hidden dips” in a lagoon on Fun Island, that appeared to be calm and just waist-deep.
John Jones drowned just two days into the honeymoon in 1998 when the couple were wading through the lagoon. The couple fell into a 20-foot “hole” and Mr Jones, who could not swim, drowned.
Lisa Jones’ lawyer said a brochure described how holidaymakers could walk safely in the lagoon, telling the judge that the holes were a “hazard” that should have been pointed out to holidaymakers. Sunworld has denied any blame, has stated that there was no breach of contract, and says there was “contributory negligence” on the part of the couple.
