Wizz Air to open UK base at Luton

Sunday, 16 Feb, 2017 0

Wizz Air is to open its first UK base this summer, at Luton Airport.

Luton will become the airline’s 28th base on June 28 and Wizz Air will operate one new Airbus A320 aircraft from the airport.

Luton has operated Wizz Air flights for over 12 years. The airline is Luton’s second largest carrier and said it remains commited to the UK, despite the Brexit vote.

Coinciding with the new base, three new WIZZ services will commence in June, to Tel Aviv; Prishtina, the capital of Kosovo and Kutaisi in Georgia – the only direct connection between Georgia and the UK. These additional services take the number of routes from the airport to 42.

Frequencies on some of WIZZ’s most popular routes will also increase with the arrival of the new aircraft: Suceava will run five times per week, Constanta four times per week and Iasi flights will operate daily.

In 2016, as the second largest operator at London Luton, WIZZ carried more than five million passengers. In 2017 Wizz Air will have almost 6.3 million seats on sale on its London Luton routes, representing a 13% growth year on year.

Wizz Air CEO József Vradi said: "Today’s announcement again underlines Wizz Air’s commitment to the UK.

"By establishing base operations at Luton, where WIZZ is already the second largest operator and an important supporter of local jobs with our business partners, we are also creating direct local jobs with one of Europe’s fastest-growing airlines for the first time."

Seats on the new routes are on sale, starting at £34.99 one-way.
