World Cup fans face disruption as airport workers go on strike

Thursday, 12 Jun, 2014 0

A 24-hour strike by staff at Rio de Janeiro’s Galeao airport is set to cause disruption for football fans flying to Brazil for the start of the World Cup today.

Workers are staging a partial walkout over pay at the airport, which is expected to be one of the busiest in Brazil for the four-week tournament.

But staff have agreed to maintain 80% of normal service after a labour court issued an injunction and threatened fines of up to £13,400.

A walkout is also taking place at the city’s domestic airport, Santos Dumon, which provides flights to Sao Paulo, where the first game will be held later today.
