World Youth Day planned for July in Rio
Young Catholic people as well as religious travelers from many faiths are planning to gather together from July 21-29 in Rio de Janeiro for the 11th biennial World Youth Day (WYD) festival.
The festival will bring pilgrims from around the world to worship together with the Pope during the multi-day event.
The festival was created by Pope John Paul II 1986. The first WYD was held in Rome, and it has occurred every two years in a different city since its inception.
The theme of World Youth Day in 2013 is "Go and Make Disciples of All Nations."
Rio’s cultural icons like the National Museum of Arts, as well as local cathedrals and churches will all be hosting festival events in the afternoon and the evenings.
Opening ceremonies will begin on July 23 and Pope Benedict XVI will arrive to officiate on the 25th. There will also be a reenactment of Christ’s Passion and Death as the centerpiece of the celebrations with the Pope.
