The World Travel and Tourism Council has named the destination for its fifth Global Travel and Tourism Summit.

New Delhi fought off competition from Shanghai and Washington to win the bid to hold the lucrative event. It is being held in early April next year and will be attended by government ministers and leaders in the tourism sector.

According to WTTC, India is an ideal location for the event because tourism in the country is growing at 8.8% per year in terms of economic revenues. According to research conducted by TSA, it estimates India’s travel and tourism economy to generate over $90 billion of demand by 2014, creating around 28 million jobs.

This year’s conference, which was covered by TravelMole, took place in May in Doha, capital of Qatar. Representatives from Qatar Airways, Marriott, InterContinental Hotels, Octopus Travel, Opodo, Deloitte, Accenture and the BBC were among the speakers at the event. The year before it was held in Vilamoura in Portugal.
