WTTC unveils first tourism climate impact data on global scale

Saturday, 29 Nov, 2022 0

The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) unveiled new data on tourism climate impact.

It details the climate footprint of the global tourism sector in more detail than ever.

The findings were launched at the 22nd Global Summit in Riyadh.

In a world-first, the research covers 185 countries across all regions and will be updated annually.

WTTC says it now accurately reports and tracks the environmental impact of the sector.

Past estimates suggested tourism climate impact was responsible for up to 11% of all emissions.

However, WTTC’s research shows that in 2019 the sector’s greenhouse gas emissions were 8.1% globally.

It says emissions have been falling consistently since 2010 as the result of technological developments.

The broader Environmental & Social Research (ESR) features measures of the impact against pollutants, energy sources, and water use.

WTTC will continue to announce new data against these indicators throughout 2023.
