Yahoo unveils travel plans

Monday, 27 Oct, 2005 0

Yahoo announced today that it plans to dramatically change the way travellers can use the web by launching tools to turn Yahoo travel (www.travel.yahoo) into a users repository of photos, itineraries, planning tips and maps of destinations.

The goal is to lessen reliance on professional content and allow users to research and share travel tips with friends and family, or indeed, anyone with internet access.

From there, consumers can share digital travel photos, participate in travel-related message boards, or contribute user reviews and ratings, among other features.

Already hosting a raft of online holiday rentals supplied direct by owners, potentially the site will enable travellers to assemble almost live-time travel catalogues using digital cameras and mobile phones.  Travel planners could then access other peoples experiences and tips, a ready made on-line travel guide.

Where does this all leave the traditional travel agent? Once again, technology is opening up the world to virtually anyone with access to a computer. Consumers will need to be convinced that the travel agent is adding value before they part with their hard earned on the shop floor.
