Yotel ‘micro-hotel’ concept coming to San Francisco
San Francisco is poised to get its first taste of the ‘capsule’ style hotel lifestyle with the debut of the Yotel brand on the west coast.
New York real estate developer Synapse Capital has purchased the historic 61,000-square-foot Grant Building at Market St and will convert its empty offices into a 200-room hotel with London based company Yotel.
The building’s previous lease expired in 2011, and the building has been boarded up ever since.
Yotel has capsule style hotels in London and Amsterdam and opened a Times Square, New York property in 2011.
Yotels terms its accommodations as ‘cabins’ and its New York rooms measure 170 square feet, almost 50% smaller than an average New York hotel room.
Yotel décor is generally minimalist with space-efficient design and tech such as retractable beds and the ‘Yobot’ – a robotic baggage carrier.
Yotel’s New York rates average about $249 a night.
The landmark Grant Building dates from 1904 and survived unscathed after the 1906 earthquake and fire.
San Francisco hotel occupancy is averaging at an all-time high of 80% and rates have increased 10% over the last year.
Average room rate in the city is about $200 a night.
The Yotel project will be overseen by architects BAR and engineering firm Homes Culley.
Last week Yotel also announced tentative plans for a new hotel in Boston.
