Youtravel marketing manager’s charity bike ride
Youtravel marketing partnership manager Richard Gamber will join the Alzheimer’s Society’s fund raising bike ride from London to Paris in July this year.
The ride covers 300kms over four days and ends in Paris in front of the Eiffel Tower.
Gamber’s own mother suffers from dementia, which also affected his grandmother.
"The Alzheimer’s society urgently need support," he said. "At the moment there are 850,000 people with dementia in the UK, with numbers set to rise to over one million by 2025. This will soar to two million by 2051. Some 225,000 will develop dementia this year, that’s one every three minutes."
There is no cure for Alzheimer’s disease or any other type of dementia. Delaying the onset of dementia by five years would halve the number of deaths from the condition, saving 30,000 lives a year, according to the Alzheimer’s Society.
"Dementia research is desperately underfunded. For every person living with dementia, the annual cost to the UK economy is over £30,000 and yet only £90 is spent on dementia research each year," added Gamber.
"This is why I am doing the ride in support of the Alzheimer’s society. I felt I could either sit back or try and do something about it and raising money to help combat this disease."
Gamber has pledged to raise over £1750. Donations can be made here.
