Amadeus River Cruises has announced that Amadeus Douro, an elegant new hybrid river ship, is set to debut on the Douro in 2028. Sailing between March and November, the ship marks Amadeus’s entry into one of Europe’s most sought-after river cruise destinations, offering guests an immersive journey through the spectacular landscapes of northern Portugal. Purpose-built to navigate the Douro’s winding passages and historic locks, Amadeus Douro will combine signature Amadeus elegance with innovative hybrid propulsion technology. Designed to deliver an intimate and refined cruising experience while reducing its environmental footprint, the ship will invite guests to journey through one of Europe’s most enchanting river valleys, where terraced vineyards, historic villages and sun-drenched hillsides create a setting unlike any other in river cruising. “We are delighted to bring the Amadeus experience to the Douro, one of Europe’s most beautiful and culturally rich regions,” said Corina Lueftner, Head of Sales at Amadeus River Cruises. “The Douro Valley has become an increasingly popular destination, and with Amadeus Douro we are excited to offer our partners and guests a truly immersive way to explore its extraordinary scenery, wine heritage and historic towns.” Designed with the signature elegance that defines the Amadeus fleet, Amadeus Douro will accommodate 111 guests in 54 staterooms and two suites, most featuring the line’s signature drop-down panoramic windows or private balconies. Amadeus biometrics mix domestic and international traffic at Manchester airportManchester Airport rolled out a smarter, more flexible future for air travel, unveiling a next-generation ...Read moreAmadeus biometrics mix domestic and international traffic at Manchester airport - News & announcementsPowered by advanced biometric identity reconciliation developed with Amadeus, the new system tackles one of aviation’s biggest challenges: rising passenger numbers combined with limited terminal capacity. Instead of separating domestic and international travelers into different zones—a long-standing but increasingly inefficient approach—the airport is shifting to a digitally orchestrated flow.
At the heart of the transformation is Amadeus biometric technology embedded throughout the passenger journey. It verifies identity in real time, allowing travelers to move through key checkpoints without repeated document checks. For passengers within the UK’s Common Travel Area, the process is seamless from curb to gate. International travelers are automatically directed to the appropriate UK immigration channels, including eGates or officer processing handled by the UK Border Force.
The result is a dynamic system where passengers with different travel requirements share the same infrastructure—without compromising compliance or security. It also enables the airport to use its space far more efficiently, reducing bottlenecks and improving overall flow.
The initiative is part of Manchester Airport’s £1.3 billion transformation program, designed to future-proof operations while enhancing the passenger experience. According to Managing Director Chris Woodroofe, the innovation is as much about what travelers don’t notice as what they do—smoother journeys, fewer interruptions, and more intuitive movement through the terminal.
Increasing capacity within existing facilities
Since launch, the biometric platform has been handling tens of thousands of passengers each month, achieving automated identity reconciliation rates close to 99% across both arrivals and departures. Early data points to clear gains, including increased capacity, stronger commercial performance, and improved operational efficiency.
For Amadeus, the project signals a broader shift in how airports are designed and operated. Biometrics are no longer just about faster processing—they are becoming the backbone of intelligent infrastructure, where digital identity reshapes how physical space is used.
Terminal 2’s new model is already live for travelers flying with carriers such as Aer Lingus, Aurigny, British Airways, easyJet, and Loganair.
As the final phase of the Terminal 2 program nears completion, Manchester Airport is positioning itself as a benchmark for the next generation of airport operations—delivering smarter passenger processing, greater resilience, and long-term growth without sacrificing security or service quality.
In the meantime, in another development, Manchester airport definitively closed Terminal 1, its historical passengers' facility on March 11, 2026.
Terminal 1 main user, Ryanair, relocated to Terminal 3 while Terminal 2 has been transformed into a state-of-the-art facility that now handles more than 75% of all passengers using the UK’s busiest air gateway outside London.

Through the AMADEUS Smiles Projects, Amadeus aims to create a tangible, positive impact by supporting vital conservation and cultural preservation efforts. By aligning their charitable initiatives with these causes, they seek to ensure that the natural beauty and rich traditions of the regions they explore are preserved for future generations. The AMADEUS Smiles Projects initiative is built around two core themes that resonate deeply with their guests: River Habitat Conservation and European Cultural Heritage. River Habitat Conservation Through initiatives that protect riverbanks, reduce pollution and restore habitats, Amadeus is helping safeguard the pristine environments that their cruises traverse and to protect these vital rivers, ensuring they continue to inspire and sustain both nature and their voyages for generations to come. Projects they are supporting include:- In partnership with Rewilding Europe, Amadeus is supporting the resurgence of the Dalmatian Pelican - one of Europe’s most iconic and endangered bird species - along the Black Sea Mediterranean Flyway. By improving habitats, reducing powerline collisions, enhancing nesting sites in Romania, Bulgaria and Ukraine, and engaging local communities, they are helping to revitalise biodiverse wetlands and restore the natural balance of these landscapes.
- In partnership with Djerdap National Park, Amadeus is safeguarding its untouched landscapes and rich biodiversity. Home to the stunning Djerdap Gorge, the park boasts some of Europe's most awe-inspiring natural beauty. Amadeus’ support helps protect this remarkable environment and its surrounding ecosystems, ensuring it remains a sanctuary for wildlife and a source of inspiration for future generations.
- At the confluence of the Danube and Drava rivers unfolds Kopački Rit, an impressive mosaic of water and land that harbours an overwhelming diversity of species. Amadeus’ support focuses on sustainable forest management, particularly on replacing non-native species with native trees such as Black Poplar and White Willow. This initiative replaces the Euro-American poplar in the Podunavlje canal system and contributes to preserving ecological corridors in order to maintain the landscapes structure and improve the biological balance of this valuable protected area.
- Lepenski Vir, located along the Danube River in Serbia, is one of Europe's most significant archaeological sites, dating back to 9500-5500 BC. Renowned for its distinctive trapezoidal houses and remarkable stone sculptures, the site offers a unique glimpse into early human settlements. In addition to adding Lepenski Vir to the onshore visit itinerary, Amadeus is supporting the site's long-term sustainability by addressing energy efficiency challenges and helping to create better conditions for visitors while preserving this invaluable cultural heritage.
- The Glasmuseum Wertheim is a treasure trove of exquisite glass art and craftsmanship. Founded in 1976, it traces its origins back to the laboratory glass industry that has been based in Wertheim since 1948 and still exists today. Amadeus is helping the museum to expand its remarkable collection and supporting educational programmes for children and young people, ensuring it remains a vibrant and inspiring cultural landmark for future generations.
- The Nederlands Openluchtmuseum in Arnhem is a vibrant showcase of Dutch cultural history, featuring historic buildings, traditional crafts and picturesque rural landscapes. Amadeus’ donation supports hands-on experiences in traditional crafts, helping to preserve and adapt these skills for diverse audiences.
- Reduced emissions using advanced software and the latest engines

- Equipped the AMADEUS fleet with advanced water treatment systems, utilising membrane technology and microfiltration to recycle all onboard water
- Reduced energy consumption through specially insulated windows
- Implemented smart heat recovery systems in engine rooms and public areas to enhance energy efficiency
- Fostered a respectful environment for nature, local communities and employees and crews
- Developed an innovative design with a relatively shallow draft, allowing navigation of rivers even at low water levels.
