Kiwi.com says it will use the funding to strengthen its position in the global travel industry. Co-founder and CEO Oliver Dlouhy says, since its founding in 2012, the platform’s technology has brought about industry disruption “not seen since low-cost carriers entered the market over 50 years ago.” “The investment will enable us to continue to build on that innovation and drive future growth to support more customers,” he says.

A digital innovation that has brought self-connect options to over 10 million travelersThis year, Kiwi.com celebrates 10 years since it took its unique place in the travel industry as the innovative start-up that brought the then unknown concept of Virtual Interlining to the world. The arrival of this self-connect innovation changed the possibilities for booking travel and enabled travelers to select their itinerary based on the best route and the best price available, no matter the airline. Kiwi.com built Virtual Interlining from concept to reality, but excellence didn’t come overnight – there was a lot of learning required to provide the best user experience such as optimizing the minimum connecting times across airports around the world and adjusting the product on the go to reflect that knowledge and insight. Today, Kiwi.com’s algorithm finds millions of flight options in real-time, not dictated by the codeshare agreements of airlines or restricted by whether the best route contains both legacy and low-cost carriers. It brings passengers to the lesser known smaller local airports that may not have previously been considered by customers and a more efficient route to reach their end destination thereby providing customer choice that didn’t exist before.
The roots of Virtual InterliningThe idea of Virtual Interlining was introduced back in 2011, when Oliver Dlouhý, co-founder and CEO at Kiwi.com, struggled to buy cheap tickets to his final destination as direct flights were prohibitively expensive. He discovered the best and cheapest itinerary could be found by connecting different carriers with a layover and that was the birth of the idea. In 2012, Oliver Dlouhý and Jozef Képesi, Chief Technology Officer at Kiwi.com, together founded Kiwi.com and started developing a unique flight combination algorithm – Virtual Interlining.
"The real change began when we started to create a database of minimum connecting times."Stanislav Komanec, VP of Engineering at Kiwi.com remembers the early years, “Back then we didn’t have any database defining minimum connecting times. We were offering itineraries with approximate assumptions of how much time the passenger would need to change carriers at the airport. The real change began when we started to create a database of minimum connecting times, including using feedback from our customers. At this point, we knew that ‘this airport’ is small and all gates are near, but for ‘that airport’ the passenger would need extra time to change terminals or walk further to find a gate, with the feedback we could get much more precise. I feel very proud that we built such an intelligent database of minimum connecting times from zero and today it helps our customers to travel efficiently whilst finding unique and cheap itineraries.”
Virtual Interlining todayIn 10 years the algorithm developed significantly. In the beginning, Virtual Interlining enabled the connecting of different carriers that didn’t cooperate, but the creativity had only just started. The algorithm brought the idea to make multicity travel much more orderly and Kiwi.com’s developers created NOMAD – a feature that finds the cheapest multicity combination among selected layover cities. With the ability to see almost 100% of flight content in real-time, the possibilities to provide value not available elsewhere grew by unpicking the pricing policies of airlines to find further ways to bring reduced prices to customers.
"We enabled some 10 million passengers to self-connect thanks to our unique itineraries."Oliver Dlouhý, CEO at Kiwi.com adds, “Our Virtual Interlining algorithm connected airports and cities that were unconnected before – we allowed customers to save a significant portion of money on their flights and lots of customers to fly that could not take that route before. We enabled some 10 million passengers to self-connect thanks to our unique itineraries and thanks to our innovative technology that no one else managed to bring to the market before Kiwi.com.” However, Virtual Interlining didn’t only bring positive change only for travelers. It also helped airports to revolutionize the industry and become airport hubs without hosting major legacy airlines. Thanks to the Virtual Interlining algorithm of Kiwi.com, airports had the means to become virtual hubs. They started to support travelers self-connecting through their airports and providing Fast Track and additional discounts for a pleasant stay during the transfer. The revolution is still on the rise and there are growing numbers of European airports joining the initiative.
The future of Virtual InterliningThe current worldwide trends push industries to become more digitalised, progressive, and agile and the travel industry is no different. With insights and information gathered through Kiwi.com’s extensive view of the market and knowledge of customer preferences partners, including airports, will be more able to provide services tailored for the self-connecting passenger, attracting new business and providing a better experience. Mario Gavira, VP of Growth at Kiwi.com adds, “The massive acceleration of the digital shift during the pandemic means that travelers in the future will expect to be able to manage their end-to-end travel arrangements in a fully digital and frictionless way. For this reason, in Kiwi.com we are heavily investing in our app to provide all required services starting with the inspiration, moving to shopping up to the actual traveling phase, in one easy accessible and seamless platform. The end goal is to offer our customers the ultimate digital end-to-end travel companion while enjoying seamless virtually interlined itineraries.”

2021 brought many positives for Kiwi.com’s business relationships – forming new industry partnerships and supporting travel organizationsThe year 2021 was, for many businesses, focused on overcoming challenges and learning how to live with the ongoing impacts of the pandemic. Kiwi.com took a lead in getting travel back on track– the travel tech company strengthened its B2B partnerships and actively participated in new cooperations, bringing better travel offers and opportunities for the customer, as they sought a new approach to aid their recovery following the impacts of the pandemic. Kiwi.com cooperated with a number of well-known brands, including ride-hailing and employee benefit initiatives, establishing brand partnerships beneficial for both parties. Demand for self-connecting itineraries continued with more airports looking to increase traffic and partner with Kiwi.com to harness this trend. Additionally, tourism boards acknowledged missed opportunities to promote their destinations and cooperated with Kiwi.com where they were supported with destination brand awareness and travel discounts on top.
AirportsThe airport supporting Virtual Interlining itineraries can become a self-styled virtual hub, by providing connections that are not managed by an airline or a group of airlines but created directly by passengers or by platforms such as Kiwi.com that build those unique self-connecting itineraries for their customers. This way, travelers get many more options to reach their final destination, while airports support transferring passengers and benefit from increased traffic. During 2021 ten new airports chose to partner with Kiwi.com and support self-connecting passengers, including Prague, Brussels South Charleroi, and Dortmund airports. Partner airports activated services such as Smart Pass and Fast Track to enhance the transfer customer experience, plus benefited from Kiwi.com Search and Book data insights. Some have introduced widgets and white labels implemented on their websites, offering a direct option to search for the preferred destination from the given airport and book straight away through the Kiwi.com booking page. Additionally, the company cooperated with the airport operator, VINCI Airport group, to facilitate a smoother transfer for self-connected passengers.
DestinationsIn 2021 Kiwi.com actively started to support Tourism Boards and Destination Management Organizations by working with them to bring travelers back to their destinations, running marketing campaigns, destination awareness and promotions to inspire travelers. The opportunity to encourage bookings directly by implementing a widget or white label on their website is also available to Tourism Boards, giving a direct link to the Search and Book pages of Kiwi.com. Since making this service available last year, Kiwi.com has partnered with five Destination Management Organizations, one of them being Visit Portugal. The partnership involved a marketing campaign promoting the destination to Kiwi.com customers in the monthly newsletter and on the main Kiwi.com Search pages. The activity also involved special promotions offering Kiwi.com customers a reduced price for trips to Portugal, including certain airlines and routes.
Brand Partnerships2021 saw Kiwi.com strengthening its brand in local markets, with a promotional partnership involving gamification with Uber in Poland and Romania bringing over 7 million impressions and thousands of new subscribers. The joint effort resulted in mutual brand promotion on both Kiwi.com and Uber platforms. Kiwi.com also became a provider of travel as an employee benefit with specialists in this field, Sodexo and eHotel.cz, in the Czech Republic.
AffiliatesTo date, Kiwi.com has over 620 active affiliate partners including travel providers, travel bloggers, and travel photographers who create inspiring travel content and promote links to Kiwi.com Search and Book pages. In 2021 Kiwi.com reactivated cooperation with Urlaubstracker in the German market offering website users regular Kiwi.com flight deals. The company also cooperated with a discount coupons website Capital One Shopping in the US and a shopping rewards provider Global Savings Group in the UK market.
Travel RetailersIn 2021 Kiwi.com’s platform for partners, Tequila, saw triple the number of registrations compared to 2020 with over 16,500 new accounts being created. In total, Kiwi.com has 26,000 partners connected through Tequila and benefiting from easy to set up travel solutions available in the platform, one of them being Search & Book API integration. A new partner using the Kiwi.com API in 2021 is Travala.com – the first Online Travel Agency simplifying the use of cryptocurrency in the travel segment. Travala.com is bringing its customers access to flight and route choices with more than 600 airlines around the world thanks to Kiwi.com and it enables travelers to book flights with bitcoin and 60+ other cryptocurrencies. Another partner Kiwi.com is proud to cooperate with and was strengthened in 2021 is airasia SuperApp, a comprehensive lifestyle platform, connecting people to places, and people to people. Complementing the travel products, shopping, food, and rewards offered at airasia SuperApp, Kiwi.com powers the database providing flights to over 3,000 destinations worldwide.
Content AcquisitionIn 2021 the company acquired 30 new content acquisition partners covering all continents worldwide. These partners support Kiwi.com in building its vast travel database with self-connect combinations. In March, Sabre, a leading software and technology provider powering the global travel industry, became a new content partner of Kiwi.com. Through these content acquisition partnerships, in 2021, Kiwi.com saw the highest ever volume of travel content in its database, bringing more relevant and better itinerary choices to its customers.
