
The international RIU chain was founded in Mallorca by the Riu family in 1953 as a small holiday firm and is still owned by the family’s third generation. The company specialises in holiday resorts and over 70% of its establishments offer its acclaimed All Inclusive by RIU service. With the inauguration of its first city hotel in 2010, RIU is expanding its range of products with its own line of city hotels called Riu Plaza. RIU Hotels & Resorts now has 100 hotels in 20 countries. In 2020, the chain welcomed 2,3 million guests and provided jobs for a total of 24,425 employees. RIU is currently the world’s 32nd ranked chain, one of the Caribbean’s most popular, the third largest in Spain in terms of revenue and the fourth largest in number of rooms.

Riu Palace Macao hotel inauguration. The common areas are now decorated with the sophistication of the RIU Palace line, with the new style the chain is launching in its renovations and new hotels: brighter, more open spaces, soft, natural colours, high-end materials and prominence given to tropical vegetation both in decor and in interior gardens. Two great examples include the lobby and reception desk, the first spaces welcoming RIU guests with the new and elegant style. New items include the expansion of the bar and lounge, to which a second outdoor stage has been added for smaller performances and a DJ booth, as well as a new RIU Fit area.
In terms of cuisine, the hotel continues to offer a wide variety of restaurants and options for guests. In addition to the international buffet, there is an Italian restaurant, ‘Volare’; a steakhouse; one serving up Asian small plates, ‘Kabuki’; and a fusion restaurant called ‘Krystal’. All of these restaurants have been renovated with a unique style rounding out the culinary experience. With this renovation, Riu Palace Macao has added a new Sports Bar that will serve food and drinks 24 hours a day and a grill area called ‘Pepe’s Food’ with a Burger Bar with top-quality ingredients in the pool area, which continues to have three different swimming spaces, including one with a swim-up bar.
All 476 rooms have also been fully renovated. The new furniture has simple straight lines while the colour palette is in natural wood tones, beige and green. The style is inviting and elegant and the decor features plant patterns both on the main wall and on the glass separating the bathroom from the bedroom. One of the biggest changes is the implementation of swim-up rooms with a private pool. These rooms are exclusively for Elite Club by RIU service guests.
The Elite Club service allows Riu Palace Macao guests to enjoy perks never before seen at this destination. In addition to the 34 rooms with a private pool, there are another 22 rooms for customers using this service. The Elite Club offers its guests a lounge area with a bar reserved just for them, an exclusive restaurant offering an à la carte dinner, an à la carte breakfast at the Italian restaurant, which is adapted to this service every morning, and an exclusive beach with its own bar service serving premium drinks for Elite guests.
Riu Palace Macao is within the RIU Complex in Punta Cano and shares the Splash Water Park, RIU Parties, Casino, which has also been renovated, Caribbean Street with its picturesque shops and Pachá nightclub with the four hotels in the complex. All guests of RIU hotels in Punta Cana will also now be able to use the hotel chain’s largest wellness centre to date. Taking advantage of the renovation of Riu Palace Macao, RIU has built a new space dedicated to its guests’ wellness, beauty and fitness. The new centre has a large gym with all the equipment necessary for guests to have a complete training session, beauty salon and hairdresser, and a spa with two water areas, steam baths and up to nine massage booths. RIU entrusted management of this new space to Renova Spa, its trusted partner specialising in wellness and beauty services.
The Riu Palace Macao renovation is in line with the renovations RIU is carrying out at its destinations around the world, with this one particularly reinforcing the company’s commitment to Punta Cana, RIU’s first international destination, established in 1991. The renovation of Riu Palace Macao is in addition to the renovation of Riu Bambu in 2017, Riu Palace Punta Cana, renovated in 2018 and the upcoming renovation of Riu Palace Bavaro, which will be completed in 2024 and includes an expansion of what up until now was Hotel Naiboa.

After the refurb, the first thing guests will notice when they arrive in the hotel lobby and reception area will be the natural light and sense of space. Soft colours, wood and vegetation play an important role in this area, which is both more functional thanks to the spacious and comfortable reception area and more attractive thanks to the new decoration and furniture and the popular lobby bar "Frida". The rooms are also brand new. With soft and elegant tones, the 506 rooms are still equipped with all the amenities to ensure that RIU’s guests can enjoy their holiday in the utmost comfort. There is also a new room type, swim-out rooms with a private pool, that are already a classic in many RIU hotels. The hotel will offer five to guests who are looking for an extra touch of exclusivity.
But undoubtedly, one of the biggest changes following the reopening of the Riu Caribe is the launch of RIU Pool Party events in Cancun. This exclusive party concept conceived by RIU was born in Los Cabos in 2018, and five years later these fun-filled spectacles are finally landing in Cancun. With a dedicated space to hold these parties, which has an exclusive pool area, the Riu Caribe now offers four weekly parties both in the day and at nighttime with several different themes: the White Party, the Jungle Party, the Neon Party and the Pink Party. As if that wasn't enough, these exclusive adults-only RIU Pool Parties are accompanied by yet another new feature: the RIU Party rooms. These 74 rooms blend in perfectly with their surroundings and are themed and prepared for guests who want to experience these exclusive RIU Party events to the fullest.
As for dining options, variety remains the hotel's strong point. All of the restaurants have been renovated, creating new atmospheres and spaces to take the guest experience to the next level. The international buffet restaurant is joined by the Mexican restaurant “Margarita”, the Asian restaurant “Shangri-la”, the gourmet restaurant “Kulinarium”, the grill-style food station “Pepe's Food” near the pool area and the popular Steakhouse for evening dinners. The hotel also has four bars: the lobby bar, the lounge bar located in the theatre, a sports bar offering food and drink 24 hours a day and an adults-only swim-up bar in one of the pools.
The hotel has gone from having one large swimming pool to four, one of which has an swim-up bar, another one for children and two others for the entire family, where they can enjoy the best entertainment provided by the RIU Hotels entertainment team The entertainment team will also be in charge of the new RIU Fit sports area, which will be complemented by a fully equipped gym, as well as a wide range of water activities on the hotel's beach.
The refurbishment of the Riu Caribe is a continuation of RIU’s commitment to modernising and renovating all of its 22 hotels in Mexico, a country where it has been operating for more than 25 years, having carried out extensive refurbishments in the vast majority of them. The next to be refurbished will be the Riu Palace Pacifico on the Rivera Nayarit, where work already started this August and will be finished in early December.

Technological advancements and artificial intelligence (AI) have formed part of companies’ day to day for years, providing them with increasingly effective marketing tools to get the right message to the right user at the right time. The GMPAs recognise the industry’s most innovative and high-tech projects developed using Google tools. This year, Boston Consulting Group worked on the GMPAs. RIU and Making Science received a Gold award with a project in the Digital Transformation category called ‘Reaching the right user; RIU’s strategy to attract high-value customers by harnessing first-party data with AI’. The RIU hotel chain was looking to enhance its campaigns to capture customers by aiming them at higher-value and profitability customers, improving user experience without lowering the number of conversions into bookings. In partnership with Making Science, the two companies transformed the digital strategy to optimise their first-party data into business data. RIU transformed its digital strategy in three fundamental steps.Structure first-party data: The first step was to structure first-party data on Google Cloud to create a customer data platform (CDP) architecture adapted to its needs and structure. As Juan Campins, VP of Digital Channels at Riu Hotels & Resorts explained, ‘What we were looking to do was gather all customer experience data into a single environment: one that was secure, scalable and connected that would allow us to orchestrate our audiences in real time on first-party channels like the payment channel.’ Coordinate teams: Define the joint goals between the IT and Digital Channels teams using first-party data as the basis for strategy transformation. In the words of Álvaro Verdeja, global director of data and the cloud at Making Science, ‘each team working with first-party data provided their data sources: digital marketing platforms, contact centre platforms, the booking engine, etc.’ That established the way everyone would work together to achieve the business objectives. ‘After that, we were able to analyse user profiles to offer them a unique experience prior to reaching the website, while using it and after’, Verdeja explained. Activate first-party data thanks to AI: With Making Science, the Direct Sales and Digital Channels teams launched a variety of proprietary technological solutions based on AI models, which our partner grouped under the name Gauss. Working with Gauss AI solutions leveraging their first-party data allowed RIU to increase bookings by 99% and double its ROAS (return on ad spend). -
