Singapore Airlines reports record high quarterly revenue - News & announcements
Singapore Airlines Group (SIA) posted 3.3% growth in the third quarter operating profit to $629 million.
This is the highest quarterly revenue on record passenger carriage, despite declining yields due to stiffer competition.
Group revenue was a record $5.2 billion for the three months ended 31 December 2024, up $137 million.
Passenger flown revenue improved by $70 million (+1.7%), with SIA and Scoot carrying a quarterly record of 10.2 million passengers.
Group passenger load factor declined slightly by one percentage point to 87.2%.
SIA says declining yields were a result of stiffer competition.
Group costs were up to $4,59 billion, driven by higher non-fuel expenditure.
Still, effective cost management measures kept the rise in non-fuel expenditure below the growth in overall capacity it says.
Net fuel cost was lower due to a 20.9% drop in fuel prices before hedging.
The Group recorded an operating profit of $629 million for the third quarter up by $20 million compared to a year ago.
Shareholder equity stood at $15.4 billion as of 31 December 2024, down $1 billion from 31 March 2024, primarily due to the redemption of the remaining Mandatory Convertible Bonds (MCBs) in June 2024.
SIA is bullish on continued demand for air travel into the last quarter of FY2024/25, even as the operating landscape continues to be competitive.

Singapore Airlines reports first half results - News & announcements
Singapore Airlines Group carriers SIA and Scoot carried 19.2 million passengers in the first half of 2024, a 10.8% year-on-year increase.
However due to capacity expansion of 11%, load factor dipped by 2.4% to 86.4%.
SIA says demand for air travel remained healthy in the first six months as group revenue rose $335 million (+3.7%) to $9,497 million.
Passenger flown revenue was up $118 million it said.
Still increased competition impacted its yields, which fell 5.6%.
Despite the impact of general price inflation, the Group kept the rise in non-fuel costs to be largely in line with the 10.6% growth in overall capacity.
Overall, the Group recorded an operating profit of $796 million in the first half which is down $758 million from the previous year.
The Group posted a net profit of $742 million, $699 million less than the previous year primarily due to the weaker operating performance.
Other contributing factors included lower net interest income and a loss on disposal of aircraft, spares, and spare engines versus a gain last year.
As of 30 September 2024, Group shareholders’ equity was $13.7 billion, a $2.6 billion decline from 31 March 2024, largely due to the redemption of all remaining Mandatory Convertible Bonds (MCBs) in June 2024.
As of 30 September 2024, the Group’s passenger network covered 127 destinations in 36 countries and territories.
SIA served 78 destinations while Scoot served 71.
Singapore Airlines is investing a cool S$1.1 billion in a multi-year programme to upgrade the premium travel experience on its long haul network.
The airline will install all-new long-haul cabin products across 41 Airbus A350-900 long-haul and ultra-long-range (ULR) aircraft.
SIA will introduce a First Class cabin in its seven A350-900ULR aircraft, which travel on the longest routes.
Business Class customers will get an elevated travel experience with SIA’s upcoming Business Class seats, featuring greater levels of privacy and comfort in all 41 aircraft.
These A350-900 First Class and Business Class products will have spacious layout and ergonomic elements.
Premium Economy Class and Economy Class cabins will also be refreshed.
Alongside the cabin products, the next version of SIA’s KrisWorld in-flight entertainment (IFE) system will offer more personalisation across all cabin classes.
First Class and Business Class seats will also feature new in-flight entertainment screens.
Goh Choon Phong, CEO, Singapore Airlines, said: “Over the past six years, we have extensively engaged customers and stakeholders in the design of our next-generation long-haul cabin products.”
“The new First Class and Business Class seat designs will push the boundaries of comfort, luxury, and modernity.”
The aircraft will be retrofitted by SIA Engineering Company in Singapore.
The first retrofitted A350-900 long-haul aircraft is expected to enter service in the second quarter of 2026, while the first A350-900ULR variant will follow in the first quarter of 2027.
The entire programme is targeted for completion by the end of 2030.
Post-retrofit, the 34 A350-900 long-haul aircraft will be configured with 42 Business Class seats, 24 Premium Economy Class seats, and 192 Economy Class seats.
The seven A350-900ULR variants will feature four First Class seats, 70 Business Class seats, and 58 Premium Economy Class seats.

Singapore Airlines will pay thousands in compensation to passengers injured on a London to Singapore flight that was hit by severe turbulence.
The flag carrier said it will pay $10,000 passengers who had minor injuries.
For more serious injuries, there will be an initial payment of $25,000 for ‘immediate needs.
It will then have discussions about compensation for those who require ongoing assistance for their specific ‘circumstances.’
The airline has been covering medical expenses.
A 73-year-old British man died and many were seriously injured on the flight as it flew over Myanmar.
The plane was immediately diverted to Bangkok.
Singapore Airlines hasn’t said how many people will be eligible for the pay-outs.
Over 100 people received medical attention.
Some suffered spinal cord and brain injuries.
Singapore Airlines has already offered full refunds for all passengers.
It also offered several hundred dollars to all passengers for immediate expenses following the diversion.

Cathay Pacific and Singapore Airlines have inked a Memorandum of Understanding to collaborate on a broad range of sustainability initiatives.
These joint efforts are aimed at advocating for sustainable aviation fuel use in the Asia-Pacific region, a critical decarbonisation lever for the sector.
They will work to share best practices to boost sustainability performance.
The MoU was signed by Cathay Group CEO Ronald Lam and Singapore Airlines CEO Mr Goh Choon Phong, both in Dubai for the recent IATA Annual General Meeting .
The agreement focuses on a collective commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, and to drive sustainability changes.
Firstly, Cathay and SIA will jointly advocate for the greater use of SAF in the Asia-Pacific region.
This will include raising public awareness about SAF's role in decarbonising aviation
The airlines will also explore potential opportunities for joint procurement of SAF at selected locations.
These are aimed at boosting SAF production.
The second area of focus will be the exchange of best practices to reduce single-use plastics, minimise waste, and improve energy efficiency in ground and cargo operations.
Cathay CEO Ronald Lam said: "Our collaboration aims to accelerate and support the development of the SAF supply chain in the region.”
“We are undertaking a multi-pronged approach to contribute to the aviation industry's transition.”

As a result, the Group passenger load factor was up 2.6% to a record 88%.
Group revenue rose $1,2 billion to $19 billion with a double digit increase in passenger flown revenue.
As of 31 March 2024, the two airlines’ operating fleet consisted of 200 aircraft with an average age of seven years and three months.
In April 2024, the Group added one Airbus A350-900 and two Embraer E190-E2 aircraft to its fleet with 89 aircraft on order.
The passenger network now spans 118 destinations in 35 countries and territories.
For summer 2024, Barcelona, Beijing, Darwin, Hong Kong, Houston, KL, Melbourne, Milan, Perth, Rome, Seattle, Shanghai, Taipei-Tokyo (Narita), and Yangon will see an increase in services.
SIA launched services to Brussels in April 2024 and will begin operations to London Gatwick next month.

The aircraft will operate to existing short haul destinations such as Hat Yai, Miri, and Kuantan, as well as two routes – Koh Samui (in May 2024) and Sibu (in June 2024).
The airline group says air travel demand remains strong thanks to a strong pick up in forward bookings to North Asia and South East Asia.

This integration gives SIA a 25.1% stake in Air India Group.
