The Detroit hospitality scene is undergoing a renaissance right now. One of the most exciting stories in the Detroit development right now is the growth in accommodation options for visitors – making Detroit even more desirable for both leisure and business. Detroit’s most recently opened hotels include Roost Apartment Hotel (a 117-unit hotel within the remodelled Book Tower), Cambria Hotel (a 154-room boutique hotel downtown), and The Godfrey Hotel (a 227-room Hilton Curio Collection hotel in Corktown). In addition, the new AC Detroit Hotel is a 153-room, 11-story contemporary hotel in Midtown. Its construction is accompanied by restoration of the historic Bonstelle Theatre next door. Recently, developers announced a rooftop bar addition to the hotel. This is Michigan’s first AC hotel. Temple Detroit is a $72 million, 101-room hotel development near the Masonic Temple, backed by Brooklyn-based Ennismore design group, and due to open later this year. A new JW Marriott hotel is underway at the site of the former Joe Louis Arena. The massive 600-room, 25-story hotel will include 50,000 square feet of event and meeting space, as well as restaurants and a bar. A skybridge connection to neighbouring Huntington Place convention centre means that Detroit will become that much more sought after for hosting large-scale events. The hotel itself is anticipated to generate $100 million per year. Opening is planned for 2027. Recently announced is EDITION, set for the Hudson’s Site development. The hotel will be in the tower, which now reaches 685.4 feet tall and 45 stories. Developers report that this will be the first five-star hotel in downtown, and it will have over 16,000 square feet of event space as well as a pool, restaurants, fitness centre, and more. Opening has been cited as 2027. For residents and visitors alike the hotel boom is driving investment in supporting infrastructure, retail spaces, restaurants, and other amenities, making Detroit an even more exciting place to be.  

Visit Detroit has inked a tourism partnership deal with English Football League team Burnley FC. Visit Detroit is now the official US Destination Partner of the Clarets in a collaboration initiated by Connect FC a leading sports marketing agency. The campaign will be managed by Cellet Marketing & Public Relations Ltd, Visit Detroit’s PR and consumer marketing agency of record for the UK and Ireland. The global partnership kicks off with an activation at The Soccer Tournament (TST) in Cary, North Carolina, from 5-10 June where Burnley are competing on their US pre season tour. “Visit Detroit is excited to join their campaign for promotion. Together, we will forge a powerful connection between Detroit and the beautiful game,” says Claude Molinari, President, and CEO of Visit Detroit. Matt Lorenzo, Director of Connect FC, said: “We are thrilled to have facilitated this partnership. Our goal is to enhance brand value and fan engagement.” The global connection between the two parties is reinforced by the US ownership of the club. There is also a high-profile investment from former NFL player JJ Watt and his wife Kealia Watt, also a former player, and investors Dude Perfect, the second-largest sport YouTubers with over 59 million subscribers. Together, Burnley and their investors reach 113.6 million people globally. This will be leveraged to drive awareness of Detroit as a travel destination. The sponsorship deal will include a range of marketing activations, including digital campaigns, social media engagement and in-stadium promotions These are designed to elevate Detroit’s profile as a must-visit destination.

New Brand Designed to Reintroduce the Motor City onto the Global Stage

  At IMM 2024, Visit Detroit launched a new, fearless brand voice that is a love letter to Detroit, Detroiters, and Southeast Michigan. "When We Move, Your Move" reintroduces Detroit to a new generation of travellers everywhere while zeroing in on attracting visitors from significant target markets in North America, the United Kingdom, and Ireland.   Working to achieve a goal of 25 million visitors a year to the Detroit region by 2030, the new campaign focuses on creating a new narrative and perception for Detroit that reminds people that "Cars wouldn't be cars, music wouldn't music, and your world wouldn't be your world without Detroit."   Claude Molinari, President and CEO of Visit Detroit, shared his excitement: "Detroit is the home of American innovation, three world-changing genres of music, and an iconic ethos of style and design. Sustainability measures will abound, as will plentiful green space, trails for biking, scooters, and shuttle transportation to get guests to cafes and shopping options. This is definitely not your father’s Detroit.
• Joe Louis Greenway. This future 27.5-mile trailhead for biking, hiking, and running will be a true connector of the city. It is a symbol of the sort of great transformation many companies seek. Detroit Sports Commission to Host “Wrestling Fan Jam” during the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships

    The Detroit Sports Commission (DSC) is hosting “Wrestling Fan Jam” on Saturday, March 19 from 2-5 p.m. at Cass Technical High School to celebrate the sport of wrestling, share the excitement of the 2022 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships with the Greater Detroit community and support youth wrestling in metro Detroit.   This new program is scheduled from 2-5 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Doors open at 1 p.m. The event is designed to showcase wrestling to the Detroit community, wrestling community, youth wrestling programs, schools and championships fans. “Wrestling Fan Jam” will provide attendees with a full schedule consisting of activities, exhibits, an autograph session, and sessions, including:  

• A conversation with high school and NCAA coaches, including R.J. Boudro, head coach of 9-time state champion Lowell High School, and 2004 Olympic silver medalist Jamill Kelly, as well as University of North Carolina’s assistant coach and others.
• The opportunity to attend a USA Wrestling practice featuring women’s and men’s national team members
• A panel titled “How to Start and Sustain a Successful Wrestling Program” featuring Executive Director of Beat the Streets Detroit Mindy Herrmann, National Wrestling Hall of Fame member and Founder/President of Inner City Wrestling in Miami Wilbert Johnson and others.
• A youth wrestling demonstration on training techniques hosted by the Black Wrestling Association
• Insight on Saturday night’s NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships match-ups provided by ESPN USA Takedown Analysts Caleb Nemmers and Steve Foster as well as National Wrestling Hall of Fame member Nate Carr.

The city of Detroit is reaching out to travellers across the pond. Detroit has signalled commitment to the UK and Irish markets in 2022 to ensure international tourism continues to recover. This year sees the city marking the next chapter of its regeneration, with the refurbishment and expansion of the Motown Museum nearing a conclusion. It will see the Museum re-opening in time for the mid-summer season. Opening of several brand-new hotels, completion of final phases of the riverfront and the projected completion of the Michigan Central Station redevelopment in Corktown are just some of the highlights over the course of the next several months.
