1,000 delegates to attend first World Ecotourism Summit
1,000 delegates from over 120 countries are expected to attend next week’s World Ecotourism Summit, the main event in the United Nation’s International Year of Ecotourism.
The Summit, in Québec City from May 19 to 22, is an initiative being carried out by the World Tourism Organization and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in partnership with Tourisme Québec and the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC).
The Summit is the culmination of 15 preparatory conferences and meetings held worldwide. Governments and professionals in ecotourism and related areas have been measuring the economic, environmental and social impacts of ecotourism, an emerging industry, from the viewpoint of long-term viability and sustainable development.
Conclusions reached at the Summit will form part of the Québec City Declaration on Ecotourism, to be presented at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa at the end of August 2002.
