1926 Heritage Hotel Penang brings living heritage to new generations of travelers

A century after first opening its doors, the 1926 Heritage Hotel in Penang has been relaunched, ushering in a new chapter as part of The Ascott Limited’s Unlimited Collection.

Set along historic Jalan Burma in George Town, Penang, the hotel stands as a living reflection of the city’s layered past. Originally built in 1926 as British residences for administrative officers, the property has undergone a careful restoration that preserves its architectural heritage while adapting it for today’s travelers.

Its white-and-beige façade highlights colonial influences, with Anglo-Malay design elements typical of George Town’s transitional period. At the entrance, a palm tree flanked by two panthers—now the hotel’s emblem—welcomes guests with a sense of continuity and belonging.

As travel becomes more experience-driven, destinations with a strong identity are increasingly sought after,” said Mondi Mecja, Country General Manager of Ascott Malaysia. “Aligned with Visit Malaysia 2026, the hotel tells a distinctive Penang story, thoughtfully revitalized to remain part of the island’s heritage for generations.

A living piece of Penang

Reimagined for modern guests, the hotel retains the spirit of old Penang through preserved corridors and redesigned interiors. The central bungalow houses the main reception, entered through grand double doors. Inside, a feature wall with French-inspired straw marquetry echoes the palm-and-panther motif, blending artistry with storytelling.

Accommodations range from elegant rooms to expensive suites. The Straits Suite offers separate living, sleeping, and study areas, enhanced by plush bedding and premium bath amenities. For a more intimate experience, the 560-square-foot Heritage Garden Patio Room includes a private outdoor space and direct access to the pool, surrounded by lush greenery.

Designed for work and leisure

The hotel caters equally to business and leisure travelers. Two naturally lit meeting spaces—the Burma Room and Heritage Hall—provide settings for gatherings and events. A fully equipped gym supports fitness routines, while the Sensorium spa offers Asian-inspired treatments focused on relaxation and restoration.

Guests can unwind by the outdoor pool, framed by tropical landscaping, or retreat to the central courtyard garden, a green oasis ideal for quiet reflection away from the city’s energy.

Dining plays a central role in the hotel experience. Root House by Gen, a Chinese bistro, reinterprets the culinary heritage of Malaysia’s Chinese diaspora. Led by chef Johnson Wong—whose restaurant Gen returned to Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants in 2026—the menu draws on local ingredients and regional influences, showcasing how flavors evolve across cultures.

Complementing this is U-Bar, offering curated drinks in a relaxed social setting. The Heritage Collection by Daily Coffee serves all-day dining, featuring a mix of local favorites and international classics that reflect Penang’s reputation as a culinary capital. Guests can also browse artisanal goods at the on-site U-Shop, highlighting local craftsmanship.

True to the Unlimited Collection’s philosophy, the hotel connects guests with its surroundings. Nearby attractions include Nagore Square, the heritage temples of Lorong Burma, and the creative hub Hin Bus Depot. Together, they offer a gateway into Penang’s living culture just steps from the property.

Opening Offer

To mark its reopening, the hotel is offering a limited-time promotion through July 31, 2026. Heritage Rooms start from RM428++ (USD90) per night, including daily breakfast for two guests.

Blending history, design, and modern hospitality, the 1926 Heritage Hotel reemerges as both a destination and a storyteller—inviting guests to experience Penang’s past and present in one seamless stay.
