53 dead in China air crash
Fifty-three people – 46 passengers and six crew – were killed when a Chinese passenger plane crashed into a lake in Inner Mongolia.
According to the BBC News website, China’s first serious air accident in more than two years happened on Sunday, when the China Eastern plane plunged into the lake shortly after taking off and exploding in mid-air.
The BBC website states that the black box from the aircraft has not yet been found, and sabotage has not been ruled out.
One witness is quoted as saying that the aircraft was flying erratically, adding that is was “like a staggering drunkard”.
Another reportedly said: “Suddenly the plane disappeared into a mushroom-like cloud. At the centre of the cloud there was a glaring fire. Then the fire and the cloud fell into the park.”
