$555million from the Federal Government for Australian tourism
Speaking at a media conference yesterday at Australian Tourism Exchange, 2007, Australia’s largest tourism trade show taking place this week in Brisbane, Fran Bailey the Federal Government’s Minister for Tourism took the opportunity to express the Government’s commitment to tourism by handing over a cheque for $555million to Tourism Australia MD, Geoff Buckley [pictured right].
She said that in the recent budget the Federal Government made the announcement about securing funding for tourism for three years beyond the end of the next financial year of $193.3m, but in actual fact the Australian Government’s contribution to Tourism Australia over the next four years is an amount much, much in excess of that, totalling $555million.
Handing over the “cheque” representing the $555m to Geoff Buckley at ATE 2007, the MD of Tourism Australia, the Minister commented that she knew Geoff Buckley would spend it wisely.
Geoff Buckley said, “This is a fantastic number for us to effectively market tourism to Australia and it will be very wisely spent”, the Minister adding, “This commitment and increased level of funding has been a major factor in enabling Tourism Australia to market Australia in our international markets.”
She also said, “I want to highlight the growth Australia is enjoying out of some of these markets and in particular that last year was Australia’s best ever year including growth out of China of 14.9%, Korea 13.6%, India 12.4% and SE Asia 6.5%, all fantastic growth and we know we can do even better with the fantastic product on show here at ATE in Brisbane, showcasing the best of destinations and experiences that we can offer throughout Australia.”
