A coming attraction: 3-D travel sites
As 3-D movies become more popular, why not use the same technology to change how travelers prepare for trips?
A new travel website, 3rd Planet, is creating a site that will not only provide information about destinations but also allow would be travelers to fly around a 3-D model of their destination.
The site will provide details of actual places. Details will also include best attractions and other key items.
The 3-D technology site will give provide a realistic look at the most popular sites in a country with built-to-scale reconstructions of actual places within famous destinations.
"It will give travelers a chance to preview a city and make their plans on what they will do and where they will go once they get there,” said Terence Mak, chief executive of 3rd Planet.
The site is expected to launch later this year. It will feature Nepal as its first destination. Other countries are in the works, according to Mak. The company is working with tourism boards and other visitor promotion groups.
The site will be free to the users; partners are charged a fee.
