A reason for Malaysia to celebrate
With this month marking the 50th anniversary of Malaysia’s independence, this important historical and colourful event will see Malaysians around the world joining in the celebrations, including right here in Sydney.
The Director of Tourism Malaysia, Sydney, Shahrin Mokhtar, says Tourism Malaysia and ‘Malaysia Fest’ will be putting on a spectacular show in Tumbalong Park, Darling Harbour on Sunday 26th August to commemorate this historical event.
“Malaysia has come a long way since its independence from the British and this year, especially, has seen the country hold nationwide year-long events to celebrate this 50th year of independence,” says Shahrin.
“An array of vibrant stage performances including traditional dances; a traditional wedding ceremony, live bands, a comedy sketch and fashion show will keep the public entertained all afternoon.
“Last year, more than 20,000 people filled the park to get a little taste of the unique Malaysian culture and the different types of cuisines while discovering new holiday destinations.
“It’s a fantastic event for all – young and old – as there will be games, raffles and chances to win tickets to Malaysia,” says Shahrin.
‘Malaysia Fest’ is a free annual event supported by Tourism Malaysia, Malaysia Airlines (MAS) and the Malaysia Student Department, but predominantly organised by tertiary Malaysian students in Sydney. The event showcases the best of Malaysian cultures to the Australian public while commemorating ‘Merdeka’ Day (Malaysia’s Independence Day), which falls on 31st August.
