A4A expects another busy Christmas for air travel

Trade group Airlines for America is expecting about 47.5 million passengers will travel over the festive holidays.

That is an increase of 3% and projects an average 2.6 million passengers will fly every day from December 19 to January 5.

That is around 72,000 more passengers per day and airlines are meeting the challenge by adding 884 additional flights per day.

A4A reckons December 20, 21, 26 and 27 will likely be the busiest days while Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Eve will be the quietest travel days.

"Buoyed by a healthy economy and affordable air service, travelers once again are expected to take to the skies in record numbers," said John Heimlich, A4A’s vice president and chief economist.

"Throughout this year we’ve seen steady gains in air travel demand, and this winter will be no exception."

The TSA just screened a record 2.8 million people on December 1 following the Thanksgiving holiday.
