AAA: 39.3 million to travel for memorial Day holiday
The AAA predicts another busy Memorial Day holiday period again this year.
The organization’s latest forecast is for 39.3 million Americans to travel at least 50 miles from home during the May 25 to May 29 travel period.
That represents an increase of about one million from last year.
"The expected spike in Memorial Day travel mirrors the positive growth seen throughout the travel industry this year," said Bill Sutherland, AAA senior vice president, Travel and Publishing,
"Higher confidence has led to more consumer spending, and many Americans are choosing to allocate their extra money on travel this Memorial Day."
The vast majority or 34.6 million Americans, will drivve to their destination with 2.9 million opting to fly.
The AAA’s Leisure Travel Index reports airfares for the top 40 domestic air routes are an average 9% more expensive this year and daily car rental rates are up 7%.
According to AAA booking data, Orlando is most popular for Memorial Day travel, and Europe is also popular with strong booking volumes for Rome, London and Dublin.
