AAA: lower travel costs compensate for soaring gas prices
Lower lodging and meal costs should help vacationers compensate for record-high gas prices this year, says AAA.
Lodging and dining costs are anticipated to be four percent lower this year than in 2003, according to AAA. This represents the second largest decrease in core vacation costs since the organization began calculating the figure in 1950.
The survey found that a family of two adults and two children can expect to pay an average of $235 per day for food and lodging.
Lodging rates were averaging $125 a night, down nearly 6%.
The most expensive state for vacationers — unchanged for five years — is Hawaii at $497.
The least expensive is Kansas, where the average cost for a family of four is just $169.
