Adventure travel specialist appoints purpose officer
Adventure travel operator Tucan Travel has appointed Tanya Clover in the new role of purpose officer.
Clover, who worked in health and social care, has been appointed to drive the company’s responsible tourism vision.
Since it was launched in 1987, Tucan Travel said its ‘core purpose’ has been to ‘provide adventures with passion that open people’s eyes to the diversity of people, cultures and habitats across the world’.
"This is more important than ever with the rise of hard right self serving politics, the climate crisis and the need for the global community to unite to fight separatism," it said as it announced the appointment.
"Responsible travel requires operators to work with individuals and communities to establish sustainable solutions that balance open travel and conservation and income generation and welfare. Responsible must mean working to support education, safeguarding individuals and communities against exploitation and acting as mediator between industry and the environment. These are complex issues that require sensitive and consistent responses."
Clover, who has previously worked for an international charitable organisation, will also look at how the company, its staff and travellers can contribute to the work of recognised charities that share the same values.
"I believe that we have always been a responsible tour operator. We have always supported local people, local economies, animal welfare and been responsible about the way we travel through every place we visit," said CEO Matt Gannan.
"Tanya will be driving this vision – working with all teams and looking at what Responsible Travel means for us and our travellers."
