“Carmageddon†put off for another day
Widespread news of the temporary shutdown of California’s highly congested Interstate 405 failed to bring the widely predicted ”Carmageddon” for both residsents and tourists. But the total halt of traffic was a non-event as drivers simply stayed home.
But might short shutdown of the 10-mile stretch of busy freeway lead others to consider alternative transportation outside of motor vehicles?
Airplane travel instead?
JetBlue offered US$4 flights between Burbank and Long Beach, for example, but there seemed to be few takers in part because of the logistics involved after getting to the airports.
The Wall Street Journal suggested the shutdown to fix a bridge showed the feasibility of bicycle travel.
A group of bicyclists raced two airline passengers from Burbank to the Long Beach lighthouse and won by a significant margin.
“Indeed, the riders reportedly reached their destination before the plane even landed,” said the Journal.
Alas, the Journal concluded, Californians are so wedded to their cars that they are expected to return to normal this week — with hours-long traffic tie-ups returning to Interstate 405.
