Agoda joins Global Sustainable Tourism Council

Asia focused online travel agent Agoda has announced its membership of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).

As a full member Agoda joins a worldwide network of tourism companies and stakeholders to promote the development and adoption of universal sustainable tourism principles

"Agoda’s moonshot goal is to mainstream sustainable travel. We have doubled our investments in sustainability and are testing tools to help travellers make more sustainable choices," said Greg Wong, managing director, Agoda.

The travel platform is based in Singapore and employs more than 5,000 staff in 30 countries.

GSTC was formed by UN agencies and conservation NGOs to develop universal standards for travel and tourism sustainability.

Known as the GSTC Criteria, it is used to raise awareness, educate and set policy.

It also sets a basis for sustainability certifications.

The four pillars are sustainable management; socioeconomic impacts; cultural impacts; and environmental impacts.

"GSTC warmly welcomes Agoda as a GSTC member. We are very pleased to learn of their plans to to provide travelers with useful information on how to choose hotels that make strong efforts to operate more sustainably," said Randy Durband, GSTC CEO.
